Environment Impact Assessment of Leather and Tanning
Industries in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu

Ranipet current zone is around 120 km from Chennai on
Chennai-Bangalore expressway and is a steady tainted region perceived by Central
Pollution Control Board of India. It is one of the best conveying centers of tanned
leather in India. It is a noteworthy modern town situated on NH 4 Chennai-Bangalore
interstate. This town is arranged on the northern bank of the Palar waterway and
had a populace of 50,764 starting 2011. The hard and fast number of undertakings
arranged in and around Ranipet town are 240 tanneries close by let go, adamant,
warmer collaborators plant and chromium chemicals. Studies were done to find the
spoiling of surface water bodies in light of cutting edge effluents. As in Tamil
Nadu tanning industries have been playing a significant role in the country’s economy.
The list of major leather industries in Tamil Nadu are Dindigul, Thricy, Erode,
Pernambut, Chennai, Ambur, Vaniyambadi and Ranipet. The present study was carried
out to determine the extent of air pollution, water pollution and land pollution
in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu. An assessment was done based on type of waste, color of
waste, environmental effect, mitigation measures and its control measures. The parameters
like pH, Cl-, SO42-, TDS and Total Hardness were determined by using standard methods
of analysis. Most of the standard parameters determined in the study area were above
the permissible limit. Parameters like sodium, chlorine are found far above the
permissible limit, especially in areas near the industrial sites. Leather and tanning
industries in the study area have deteriorated the quality of air, land and groundwater
considerably.
