Abstract
Xanthium strumarium and Leucas aspera are promising medicinal plants as an excellent source of novel drugs to treat various diseases. The antibacterial activity of two different herb extracts was screened against seven pathogenic bacterial strains. Aqueous, methanol, chloroform and petroleum ether extracts of X. strumarium and L. aspera were subjected to tests of their antibacterial activity by agar disc diffusion method. The aqueous extracts of X. strumarium and L. aspera leaves against V. cholerae and S. aureus have revealed highest growth inhibition as 4 mm. The methanol crude extract against V. cholerae showed 5 mm. The chloroform crude extract against V. cholerae showed 7 mm and the petroleum ether crude extract against V. cholerae and P. aeruginosa have maximum zone of inhibition as 8 and 6 mm respectively.

The present study showed that antibacterial activity of medicinal herb X. strumarium is better than the L. aspera plants. The stronger extraction ability of petroleum ether and chloroform could have produced greater amount of the active constituents responsible for the higher antibacterial activity. In conclusion, the leaves of X. strumarium and L. aspera are good sources of antibacterial novel medicines.
